Family’s working carbon monoxide alarm prevents tragedy

PESHTIGO, Wis. (WBAY) — A working carbon monoxide alarm prevented what could have been a tragedy for a Marinette County family.

Town of Peshtigo firefighters responded to a home on Roosevelt Road on Sunday after a carbon monoxide alarm sounded. When firefighters arrived, they found elevated CO levels in the basement.

The source was traced to an older model gas boiler. It was badly corroded, plugging the fan.

Firefighters wore respirator suits to ventilate the area and remove the deadly gases from the home. No one was hurt.

Officials said the family had a working carbon monoxide alarm, so they were able to call 911 when they arrived to check on their elderly parent.

Where to install CO detectors

Firefighters recommend installing CO detectors in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, as well as in other areas required by laws, codes or standards.

Fire experts said to test CO alarms at least once a month and replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Carbon monoxide is often called the silent killer since we can’t smell or see it.

Follow the instructions for where to place the alarm and how to mount it. Choose a CO alarm that has the label of a recognized testing lab.
